Addis Ababa, 27 November 2016: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, welcomes the agreement reached between the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) of South Sudan and the United Nations on all outstanding issues concerning the deployment of the Regional Protection Force (RPF).

The Chairperson underscores the fact that the RPF will create a conducive political environment for the implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCISS) of August 2015. In this regard, the Chairperson urges all South Sudanese stakeholders to fully cooperate with the RPF and desist from engaging in activities that may set back the progress made.

The Chairperson requests the (TGoNU), working with the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC), chaired by H.E. Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana, to ensure scrupulous adherence to the transitional security arrangements. Meanwhile, the Chairperson reaffirms the complete support of the African Union through, among others, the AU High Representative for South Sudan, H.E. Alpha Oumar Konare, former President of Mali.

The Chairperson commends the IGAD and the larger international community for their tireless efforts to return the country to security, stability and development, and encourages them to continue doing so until South Sudan attains full peace and stability.
