Addis Ababa, 2 August 2013: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, followed closely the first round of the presidential election in Mali, held on 28 July 2013.
The Chairperson of the Commission welcomes the successful holding of the 1st round of the presidential election as a critical step towards the full restoration of constitutional order and the consolidation of the tremendous progress made in the recent months.
The Chairperson of the Commission commends the Malian people and political actors for the smooth conduct of the election and the peaceful mobilization of voters. She urges all stakeholders to persevere in their efforts in order to ensure the successful conduct of the second round.
The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the commitment of the AU to continue to support the Malian people and authorities in their efforts to consolidate peace and reconciliation and deepen democracy.
