The Commission of the African Union (AU), in partnership with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), is organising the Africa Amnesty Month High-level Dialogue: Continent-wide campaign on Achieving the Goal of Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2030, on Thursday, 22 September 2022 at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

What:

Joint AUC and ISS will hold  Africa Amnesty Month Continental Dialogue Towards Achieving the Goal of Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2030,

Media representatives are invited to attend the session

Who:

Journalists, news editors, bloggers, media representatives, as well as representatives of member states, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms, other relevant regional Intergovernmental bodies, the United Nations, relevant international organizations and other members of the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa, International Partners, Civil Society Organizations and Faith-based Organizations, Research/Academic institutions in Addis Ababa, are invited attend

 

Why:

The Dialogue aims to mobilize Member States, the Regional Economic Communities, Civil Society promote the commemoration of the Africa Amnesty Month. It will enable taking stock of progress made in its implementation, and identify challenges met – all aimed at realising the Goal of Silencing the Guns in the Continent.

The Africa Amnesty Month provides for the surrender and collection of illegally owned weapons, with those who surrender their weapons not being subjected to disclosure humiliation, arrest or prosecution. The active role of civil society, faith-based organizations, academia, Think Tanks, the media and other stakeholders in critical for the full realisation of this initiative. It is expected that the discussions will generate knowledge and momentum that will give credence to the implementation of the Africa Amnesty Month by Member States, with the support of all stakeholders.
