What: The Silencing the Guns Unit within Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department (PAPS) of the African Union Commission will be organizing 3rd edition of the High Level Debate on Silencing the Guns in the new decade (2021-2030): “Transforming the Vision to Reality"

When: 3 - 4 November 2021, at 15h00 (EAT)

Where: Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi, Kenya

Who: Participants are Senior leadership of the AU Commission, Representatives of Member States, Regional Economic Communities/ Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) and diverse peace mediators and experts from the Continent, as well as representatives of the civil society, including youth and women, UN, Think-tanks; Thematic experts; Media and various stakeholders.

Why: This year’s debate will further elaborate on these threats, as well as chart the way forward on implementation of the silencing the guns initiative in the new decade in line with AU Assembly Decision (Ext/Assembly/AU/Dec.1(XIV)), adopted on 6th December 2020, and the Monitoring and Evaluation framework adopted by the Peace and Security Council IN May 2021


  • Engage leading actors/practitioners, stakeholders, Centre’s of excellence on  the dynamics and drivers of conflicts in Africa, with view  to provide practical recommendations on how to take forward the implementation of the Silencing the Guns initiative in the new decade;
  • Reflect on new drivers of conflicts in Africa particularly, the resurgence of unconstitutional change of Governments and provide recommendable solutions;
  • Ensure enhanced coordination and harmonization of STG-related activities between the AU Member States, RECs/RMs, and UN in furtherance of the strategic partnership of strengthening global peace and security architecture;
  • Reflect on the best ways for increased and meaningful participation of the African citizens, especially youth, women, and civil society organisations with a view to mobilise their contribution to the implementation of the AU Master Roadmap in line with the guidelines enshrined in the M&E Mechanism; and
  • Present the Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism for the AU Master Roadmap on Silencing the Guns and discuss the best ways and means to its implementation.
