Addis Ababa, 16 September 2016: The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union, H.E. Amb. Smail Chergui, received on 14 September 2016, at the African Union Headquarters, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E. Amb. Kim Moonhwan.

The meeting was a good opportunity to exchange views on the cooperation between the African Union (AU) and the Republic of Korea, as well as on the upcoming Korea-Africa Forum, to be held in Addis Ababa, on 6-7 December 2016.

They also exchanged views on issues related to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, mainly the latest nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on 9 September 2016.

In this regard, Commissioner Chergui considered this test as a dangerous and a complicating factor and expressed AU’s demand for the strict respect of pertinent UN Security Council resolutions, and in line with AU’s decisions on nuclear weapons testing as a real threat to peace and security in the world.

Commissioner Chergui also stressed the need to promote dialogue and negotiation between all stakeholders in order to resolve peacefully the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, and to refrain from engaging in military activities likely to aggravate the situation.
