The African Union welcome the scheduling of the date of the elections in Madagascar
Addis Ababa, 22 August 2013: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, welcomes the decision taken today by the Malagasy Independent National Electoral Commission of the Transition (CENI-T), in consultation with the United Nations, to schedule the first round of the presidential election for 25 October 2013, and the holding of a possible second round, coupled with legislative elections, on 20 December 2013. The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the obligation and responsibility of all Malagasy stakeholders to strengthen the positive momentum arising from the decisions made in recent days by the Special Electoral Court (CES), in order to further enhance the prospects for the resolution of the crisis facing Madagascar.

The African Union welcomes the publication of the final list of candidates for the presidential election in Madagascar   The AU warns the Malagasy political actors tempted to undermine the electoral process against any irresponsible acts
Addis Ababa, 21 August 2013: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, welcomes the publication, today, by the Malagasy Special Electoral Court (CES), of the final list of candidates for the presidential election that would mark the restoration of constitutional order and the conclusion of the process to end the crisis. Taking place against the background of the CES decisions of 14 and 17 August 2013 concerning, respectively, the voluntary withdrawal of a candidate from the election and the removal from the list of candidates of other personalities who do not meet the conditions stipulated by the relevant Malagasy texts and the demands of Madagascar international partners, the publication of the final list of candidates for the presidential election marks a crucial step in the efforts to end the crisis.

AMISOM opens training on improving understanding and compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights (HR) for the Somali National Army Officers
Kampala – August 20th, 2013; The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has today opened a four-day training workshop on improving understanding and compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights (HR) for thirty-two officers of the Somali National Army (SNA) in Kampala, Uganda. The training which is being convened with technical and logistical support from the Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission seeks to contribute to professionalizing and building a competent Somali Armed Forces by introducing the essential rules of International Humanitarian Law, both treaty and customary rules and other relevant norms binding Somalia.

The African Union dispatches a Special Envoy to Tunisia as part of a Solidarity and Consultation Mission
Addis Ababa, 19 August 2013: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, dispatches to Tunisia, from 19 to 22 August 2013, a Special Envoy in the person of former President Pedro Pires of Cape Verde. This visit will provide an opportunity for the AU to express its solidarity with Tunisia and its people against the backdrop of the security incident that occurred recently in the country, to consult with the Tunisian authorities and the various political and social stakeholders on the evolution of the situation and to exchange with them on the modalities of an enhanced African engagement, within the framework of the AU, in support of the efforts of the Tunisian stakeholders to complete the ongoing transition.
