The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), at its 385th meeting held on 19 July 2013, reviewed the situation in Darfur and the activities of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), and adopted the following decision: Council, 1. Takes note of the report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the situation in Darfur and the African Union – United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur [PSC/PR/2.(CCCLXXXV)], the statement made by the Commissioner for Peace and Security and the briefing provided by the Deputy Joint Special Representative of the African Union – United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), as well as of the statements made by the Representatives of the Government of Sudan and Rwanda;

13 New AU and ECOWAS Human Rights Observers Begin Pre-deployment Training in Bamako

Inaugural meeting of the African Union High-Level Panel for Egypt
Addis Ababa, 16 July 2013: The African Union (AU) High-Level Panel for Egypt, established by the Chairperson of the Commission in response to the situation in that country, held its inaugural meeting today at the AU headquarters, in Addis Ababa. The meeting was attended by the three members of the Panel, namely former President of the Republic of Mali and former Chairperson of the AU Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare, Chair of the Panel; Gontebanye Festus Mogae, former President of the Republic of Botswana; and Dileita Dileita Mohamed, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Djibouti. The AU Commissioner for Peace and Security also participated in the meeting.

The Panel of the Wise concludes its third solidarity mission to Tunisia - The Panel commends Tunisia for its efforts towards consensus building and inclusivity
Two members of the Panel of the Wise of the African Union (AU), Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse and Mrs. Madeleine Kalala-Ngoy, undertook, in a spirit of pan-Africanism and solidarity, a mission to Tunisia from 1 to 6 July 2013, primarily to mark the continued support of the Africa for the continuation of the steady progress being made by the people and Government of Tunisia for a smooth political transition. The mission also aimed at assessing the level of progress in the finalization of the draft Constitution, as Tunisia prepares for general elections and other relevant aspects of the ongoing efforts, to share with Tunisian stakeholders the most positive African lessons in terms of political transitions, elections and transitional justice, and to identify areas for AU support to ensure that the gains realized are preserved and consolidated.

The Chairperson strongly condemns the attack against peacekeepers in Darfur, Sudan
Addis-Ababa, 14 July 2013: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, strongly condemns the senseless and unprovoked attack by unidentified gunmen on African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) peacekeepers that were patrolling the area between Khor Abeche and Manawashi on 13 July 2013, in which seven Tanzanian peacekeepers were killed and 17 others wounded.
