Addis Ababa, 30 April 2015: The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) learnt with deep sadness the passing away of Brigadier General Mbita, at the age of 82, in Dar-es Salaam.

Council recognized General Mbita as an illustrious son of Africa and Tanzania, who selflessly served the cause of decolonization of the Continent, in his capacity  as Executive Secretary of the Liberation Committee of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU).

Council expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the late General Mbita, to the Government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania, as well as to all Africa.

Council further expressed its conviction that his enduring legacy in the cause of Africa’s liberation will remain a shining example for generations to come. In this respect, Council requested the Commission to take steps to identify ways and means for the AU to honor the memory of General Mbita for the services he rendered to the liberation of the Continent.
