Addis Ababa, 26 May 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemns in the strongest terms the attack launched by gunmen that killed at least 29 Coptic Christians and wounded more than 25 others, in the Minya province, which lies to the south of the capital, Cairo. The Chairperson is particularly saddened that this attack occurred on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Chairperson expresses the AU’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes speedy recovery to the injured. He also expresses the AU’s solidarity with the Government and people of Egypt.

The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates his appeal to the international community to renew its commitment to defeat terrorist and extremist groups and to adopt an action-oriented approach in order to give a more concrete expression to the commitment to combat terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms and manifestations.
