Addis Ababa, 8 March 2016: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, strongly condemns the terrorist attack which took place on 7 March 2016 against an army base and a police station in the town of Ben Guerdane in eastern Tunisia. The attack, which was claimed by the so-called Islamic State group, and reportedly launched from across the border in Libya, left dozens of civilians and members of the security forces dead. Many terrorists were also killed in the fighting that followed the attacks.

The Chairperson expresses the AU's heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, as well as its solidarity with the Government and people of Tunisia. She praises the Tunisian security forces for their swift response and courage in neutralizing the terrorists.

The Chairperson stresses the need for enhanced African action in preventing and combatting the scourge of terrorism, within the framework of the AU and other relevant international instruments. She calls on the international community to further strengthen its support to the countries of the region in their fight against terrorism.
