Addis Ababa, 2 November 2018: The African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui, received today in the AU Headquarters, a High Level Delegation from the Libyan National Army, led by General Farag Almabrouk Abdulnabi Al Sawsaa.

The delegation briefed the Commissioner on the prevailing political and security situations in Libya and the efforts of the Libyan National Army to fight against terrorism in particular in the cities of Benghazi and Derna, as well as on the efforts being exerted to unite the Libyan Army.

The delegation also shared its views on the ongoing peace initiatives to the situation in Libya and stressed that the solution to the crisis can be only possible by Libyans themselves through dialogue and reconciliation. In this regard, the delegation expressed its hope to see the African Union taking a leading role in promoting dialogue and reconciliation among all Libyans.

While expressing his appreciation to the delegation for their visit, the Commissioner underlined that the African Union has steadily maintained the Libyan crisis high on its Agenda, in particular through the efforts of the AU High Level Committee on Libya and the AU High Representative for Libya. The Commissioner further stressed the importance of the national dialogue and reconciliation among all Libyan stakeholders in order to promote conducive conditions to find a lasting solution to the Libyan crisis. In this regard, he informed the delegation that the AU will take concrete steps, in close coordination with the United Nations, to convene a National Reconciliation Conference in Addis Ababa and stressed therefore the imperative for all Libyan stakeholders to engage in this Conference so that Libyans will be the owners of their political process and destiny.
