Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 23 March 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, is appalled by the terrorist attacks that took place in the early hours of Wednesday 22 March 2017 at an internally displaced persons camp in Maiduguri, north-eastern Nigeria, which killed several people and injured many others.

The Chairperson is also deeply shocked by the terrorist attack that took place on Wednesday 22 March 2017, near the United Kingdom Houses of Parliament in London, in which several persons were killed and others injured.

The Chairperson further expresses his sadness at the killing of Egyptian soldiers, on Thursday 23 March 2017, in roadside bombings during military operations on terrorist hideouts in Sinai, Egypt.

The Chairperson profoundly regrets the loss of lives in these attacks and the injuries inflicted upon many others. He expresses the AU’s solidarity with the peoples and governments of Nigeria, the United Kingdom and Egypt. He expresses his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes those injured speedy recovery.

The Chairperson of the Commission notes that such attacks demonstrate the seriousness of the threat that terrorism continues to pose to global peace and security. He reiterates the AU’s strong rejection of terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms, and calls for renewed collective action to combat these threats.
