Addis Ababa, 24 November 2017: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), H.E. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, is outraged and deeply appalled by the terrorist attack carried out earlier today in Sinai, Egypt, which killed more than 200 worshippers in a Mosque during the Muslim Friday prayers.

The Chairperson expresses the AU's deepest condolences to the families of the victims and solidarity with the Government and people of Egypt and reiterates its commitment to take robust measures to address and neutralize the conditions fomenting terrorism and its related vices. In this context, the Commission is deploying efforts to develop an effective and sustainable response to terrorism and violent extremism in the continent.

The Chairperson calls on AU Member States and the larger international community to redouble their efforts in dealing with the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism in line with AU and global frameworks.
