Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 23 May 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemns in the strongest terms the horrific terrorist attack at a concert attended by thousands of young fans in the northern English city of Manchester, resulting in at least 22 deaths, and leaving dozens of others injured. 

The Chairperson of the Commission expresses the AU’s solidarity with the Government and people of the United Kingdom (UK). He also conveys his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes speedy recovery to the injured.

The Chairperson of the Commission reaffirms the AU’s strong rejection of all acts of terrorism and violent extremism which have no place in modern society. He reiterates the commitment of the AU to work with the UK, and all stakeholders, in the prevention and combating of terrorism and violent extremism, within the frameworks of the relevant AU, UN and international instruments. He stresses further the need for enhanced international cooperation in sharing relevant information, intelligence and data among relevant agencies, in the fight against international terrorism.
