Addis Ababa, 19 August 2013: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, dispatches to Tunisia, from 19 to 22 August 2013, a Special Envoy in the person of former President Pedro Pires of Cape Verde. This visit will provide an opportunity for the AU to express its solidarity with Tunisia and its people against the backdrop of the security incident that occurred recently in the country, to consult with the Tunisian authorities and the various political and social stakeholders on the evolution of the situation and to exchange with them on the modalities of an enhanced African engagement, within the framework of the AU, in support of the efforts of the Tunisian stakeholders to complete the ongoing transition.

The visit by former President Pedro Pires to Tunisia follows the recent visit by the AU Panel of the Wise, which took place from 1 to 6 July 2013, and is part of AU’s support to the transition process in Tunisia. During his stay, former President Pires will be meeting with the highest Tunisian authorities and the leaders of political parties, as well as other political and social stakeholders.
