Addis Ababa, 27 October 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemns the attack perpetrated on 26 October 2017 against a logistic convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) on the road between Tessalit and Aguelhok, during which three Chadian peacekeepers were killed and two wounded.

The Chairperson of the Commission expresses the African Union’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and wishes speedy recovery to those injured. He expresses solidarity with Chad and commends its Government for its continued commitment to the cause of peace and security in Mali. He further expresses solidarity with the United Nations family and reiterates AU’s support to MINUSMA in the discharge of its mandate, including in facilitating the implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali.

The Chairperson of the Commission calls, once again, on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to provide full support to regional initiatives, in particular the G5 Sahel and the Nouakchott Process, which demonstrate the political will and commitment of the countries of the region to combat terrorist and criminal groups operating in the Sahel region. He looks forward to the Security Council discussions of 30 October on the G5 Joint Force and to the Donor’s conference scheduled to be held in Brussels in December 2017.
