Addis Ababa, 06 September 2019: the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Mahamat Faki, and the Commissioner for Peace and Security, Amb. Smail Chergui, are deeply saddened by the premature death of Major General Trust Mugoba, Chief of Staff of the African Standby Force (ASF) within the African Union Commission since 2017. Major General Mugoba was Zimbabwe National Army Chief of Staff before joining the AU.

Throughout his career in the service of peace and security in our Continent, General Mugoba demonstrated a distinguished spirit of sacrifice and nobleness. The integrity, dedication and professionalism that characterized him in his command of the AMANI AFRICA II ASF Exercise and then Chief of Staff of the African Standby Force (ASF) and Chief Military Advisor to the Commissioner for Peace and Security, have greatly contributed to the full operationalization of this important tool of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). General Mugoba will always be remembered for his commitment and contributions to the African Agenda.

The Chairperson of the Commission and the Commissioner for Peace and Security extend their profound condolences and heartfelt sympathy with his family, the people and the government of Zimbabwe.
