Addis Ababa, 9 April 2015:  The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU), Ambassador Smaïl Chergui, today, had consultations with the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr. Iyad Ameen Madani, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The consultations provided an opportunity to exchange views on the best ways and means to deepen the partnership between the AU and the OIC in the area of peace and security. In this respect, Commissioner Chergui and Secretary-General Ameen Madani agreed on the follow-up steps to be taken with respect to the pledge of US$10 million made by the OIC in support of the AU counter-terrorism efforts, on the occasion of the Peace and Security Council Summit meeting on the prevention and combating of terrorism and violent extremism in Africa, held in Nairobi, Kenya, on 2 September 2014.

Other issues of common concern were also discussed. These include ways through which the AU could share its experience with the OIC regarding the establishment and operationalization of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), as well as the on-going review of the United Nations peace operations.
