Bangui, 15 February 2014: The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Head of African-led International Support Mission in the CAR (MISCA), General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko, strongly condemns the attack carried out yesterday, in Bangui, against civilians. Unidentified individuals threw a grenade into a crowd in the area of PK 12. The grenade instantly killed one person and injured three others. The forces of the Rwandese contingent of MISCA, which covers the area, responded quickly after being contacted. They were able to restore calm, and evacuated the three injured to the hospital.

The Special Representative reiterates the determination of MISCA to neutralize all the criminal elements who continue to terrorize the civilian population and attempt to undermine the gains made by MISCA with the support of the French operation Sangaris, particularly in Bangui, in the process of ensuring security and stabilizing the situation. The efforts made in this regard will be intensified. The Special Representative urges the population to continue to support the actions of the international forces to facilitate the implementation of their mandates and to restore lasting security.
