Addis Ababa, 08 January 2015 – The Chinese Government has donated USD 1.2 million to support the African Union (AU) Peace Fund. A check for that amount was handed over to the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Amb. Smail Chergui, by China’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Representative to the African Union, Amb. Gu Xiaojie, in a brief ceremony at AU Headquarters today.

Receiving the check, Commissioner Chergui expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government and People for their continuous support to the AU’s endeavors to promote peace, security and stability in Africa. He recalled with appreciation that in September 2014, China donated USD two million to support AU efforts to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. On behalf of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, the Commissioner reiterated Africa’s sincere gratitude for China’s strong friendship and partnership.

On his part, Ambassador Gu Xiaojie stated that China attaches great importance to its relationship with Africa and appreciates the crucial role of the AU in promoting peace, security and stability in the continent. China will continue to stand by Africa, as the continent strives to rid itself of armed conflict and achieve sustainable development, he added.
