Bangui, 27 December 2013: The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Head of the African-led International Support Mission in the CAR (MISCA), General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko, strongly condemns the attacks carried out, on the night of 26 December 2013, by unidentified armed elements, against a MISCA Formed Police Unit (FPU) from the Republic of Congo, which was patrolling in the city centre of Bangui. During the exchange of gunfire that followed, two members of the UPC were killed, while four others were wounded.

The Special Representative wishes to reiterate the determination of MISCA to implement its mandate to protect civilians and to take all necessary measures to this end. He extends his condolences to the families of the policemen who were killed in the line of duty and wishes speedy recovery to the injured.
