The African Union welcomes the withdrawal of the South Sudan police service from Abyei

Addis Ababa, 11 May 2012: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, welcomes the withdrawal from Abyei, on 10 May 2012, of the 700-strong South Sudan Police Service (SSPS). This withdrawal was confirmed by the Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Lieutenant General Tadesse Tesfay, in a letter addressed to the AU on 10 May 2012.The Chairperson of the Commission commends the Government of the Republic of South Sudan for making good on its pledge to withdraw from Abyei, in line with the letter it addressed to the AU regarding its acceptance of the Roadmap. Meeting of the Joint Coordination mechanism of the regional cooperation initiative for the elimination of the Lord’s Resistance Army

Addis Ababa, 8 May 2012: The Ministers of Defense and Heads of Delegation of the countries affected by the atrocities of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) held the first meeting of the Joint Coordination Mechanism (JCM) of the Regional Cooperation Initiative for the Elimination of the LRA (RCI-LRA), under the chairmanship of the Commissioner for Peace and Security, H.E. Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra, in Addis Ababa, on Tuesday 8 May 2012, with the participation of representatives of the United Nations Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), the United Nations Office to the AU (UNOAU), the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
